Toyota Reportedly Developing Targa-Top GR GT Supercar

Toyota is reportedly developing a targa-top variant of its upcoming GR GT supercar, a move that could revive the "Aero Top" moniker previously used on the fourth-generation Supra. This potential open-roof configuration would allow the GR GT to directly compete with exotic open-top rivals within the premium supercar segment. The news, originating from a report by Japanese publication Magazine X, suggests this variant is in development alongside the standard coupe model. The targa-top design would feature a removable roof panel, serving as a spiritual successor to the iconic A80 Supra Aero Top from the 1990s. While Toyota has not officially confirmed these details, the introduction of such a variant would broaden the appeal of its future performance flagship.

In addition to the targa-top model, the report indicates that Toyota is also preparing a higher-performance, track-focused variant of the GR GT. This more extreme version is speculated to be a GRMN model, incorporating aggressive aerodynamic enhancements. These components are said to be inspired by advanced aerodynamic features seen on recent GT3 race car development mules. This suggests a significant emphasis on performance and track capability for this specialized variant.

The core GR GT supercar is expected to feature a sophisticated powertrain and construction. Japanese sources indicate the vehicle will boast an all-aluminum frame. The powertrain is anticipated to be a front-mounted 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine paired with a hybrid electric motor housed within a rear transaxle.
