Toyota is recalling over 20,000 EVs, including Lexus and Subaru models

Toyota announced a recall impacting approximately 20,900 electric vehicles across its Lexus and Subaru brands on May 23, 2024. The recall specifically addresses a potential defect in the vehicle's charging system. According to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a software issue within the onboard charging control unit could lead to an inability to charge the battery or, in some instances, cause the vehicle to enter a limp-home mode. This malfunction stems from a potential error in the charging control logic, which may not properly manage the charging process. Toyota stated that owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail starting July 1, 2024, and instructed to bring their cars to a dealership. Technicians will then update the charging control unit software free of charge. The affected models include the 2023-2024 Lexus RZ 450e and the 2024 Subaru Solterra. Toyota has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to this specific charging issue, as confirmed in their statement to the NHTSA.
