Toyota GR KART Launched for Accessible Family Motorsports

Toyota Gazoo Racing has launched the GR KART, an entry-level motorsports vehicle priced at approximately $2,500 USD, with the stated goal of democratizing track access for everyday families. This initiative aligns with the vision of Toyota Motor Corporation chairman Akio Toyoda, who aims to make grassroots racing as accessible as popular sports like baseball or soccer. The GR KART is engineered to overcome the logistical barriers that have historically limited kart ownership and participation in motorsports, allowing families to engage in racing without the significant overhead typically associated with professional circuits.

The 215-cc GR KART weighs 183 pounds and is designed to accommodate a broad range of users. Its features include a tilting steering wheel and adjustable pedals, enabling the chassis to be shared among family members. The vehicle's ergonomic design supports drivers ranging from 135 to 185 centimeters in height. A key innovation is its space-saving design, which allows for vertical storage. The GR KART can be stored upright in minivans like the Toyota Noah and Voxy without requiring any disassembly. This vertical storage capability is facilitated by a specially developed fuel system and an oil catch tank, preventing leaks when the vehicle is on its end.

Maintenance for the GR KART has been streamlined to keep drivers on the track. It incorporates an advanced belt-drive system with an automatic tensioner, eliminating the need for messy chain adjustments and periodic maintenance. New users are supported by a dedicated GR app that offers instructional materials. Each purchase includes a digital driver's passport, granting immediate access to participating tracks without the need for a separate racing license. The GR KART is currently available for sale exclusively within the Japanese market, with sales limited to select tracks and official GR Garages.
