Tiger Woods Loses Driver's License for Five Years

Tiger Woods pleaded no contest to a reckless driving charge on Wednesday, resulting in the suspension of his driver's license for five years. This plea follows a rollover crash in March near his home in Jupiter Island, Florida. Initially, Woods faced charges including driving under the influence (DUI), but he pleaded not guilty to that original charge. The incident occurred when his SUV clipped a truck and overturned on a residential road. A sheriff's report indicated that deputies found two pain pills in Woods's pocket and observed signs of impairment. While he underwent a Breathalyzer test that yielded a negative result, he refused a urine test. During the court proceedings in Florida's Marin County, Woods, who is 50 years old, accepted the reduced charge and made minimal statements. He was accompanied by his girlfriend, Vanessa Trump, who is President Donald Trump's former daughter-in-law and sat behind him during the hearing. Mark Steinberg, Woods's long-time manager at Excel Sports, stated to the Associated Press that Woods "is not absolved of accountability and he surrendered his license for the next five years." Steinberg also added that Woods "is continuing his treatment and prioritizing all aspects of his health." The prosecutor in the case, Thomas Bakkedahl, a state attorney, explained that two toxicologists concluded there was insufficient proof of impairment. They determined that Woods had developed a "pharmacological" tolerance to pain medication due to years of use. Bakkedahl defended his decision to accept the plea, stating, "I did what I think is right." This legal outcome adds to a series of challenges Woods has faced throughout his career. Since his significant victory at the 2019 Masters, marking his 15th major championship, his professional life has been impacted by numerous physical setbacks and personal issues. Woods, who made history as the first Black golfer to win the Masters in 1997, has undergone multiple surgeries for back and knee problems. His career has also been affected by previous car accidents and struggles with pain medication dependence. The reckless driving charge and subsequent license suspension represent a new chapter in these ongoing challenges for the influential athlete.
