ThredUp takes aim at Poshmark and eBay with new peer-to-peer listings

ThredUp launched Direct Listings, an open-beta peer-to-peer marketplace, on an unspecified date, allowing users to list individual items at their own prices. This new feature enables sellers to manage high-value or sentimental items directly within the ThredUp app, alongside the company's traditional "Clean Out" bag service. Previously, users often turned to platforms like TheRealReal or Poshmark for selling such items due to a desire for greater control over pricing and the selling process. The expansion aims to capture a broader segment of the resale market, which is projected to reach nearly $80 billion in the U.S. by 2030. ThredUp's founder and CEO, James Reinhart, anticipates consolidation within the resale industry over the next few years and believes serving diverse customer needs is crucial for success. The resale market is broadly divided into DIY, peer-to-peer platforms such as eBay, Poshmark, Depop, and Vestiaire Collective, and managed marketplaces where companies handle logistics, like TheRealReal and ThredUp's original model for mass-market brands. Focus groups revealed that a significant portion of ThredUp's sellers desired more control over specific items, prompting the development of the Direct Listings feature.
