Thread Direct looks to solve Matter’s biggest setup headache

Thread Direct introduced a new method for onboarding devices to the Thread smart home networking protocol without requiring a Thread border router. This feature allows users to set up Thread-powered devices, including smart plugs and smart locks, using only a mobile device that has a Thread radio. Previously, a Thread border router was necessary for device setup, which often involved a separate hub or smart speaker. The Thread Group, the organization overseeing the protocol, announced this development on May 14, 2024, aiming to simplify the smart home setup process for consumers. Thread Direct leverages Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for the initial discovery and pairing of devices, then seamlessly transitions the connection to the Thread network. This innovation is expected to significantly reduce friction in adopting Thread-enabled smart home products, making them more accessible to a wider audience. The protocol itself is designed for low power consumption and robust mesh networking, making it ideal for battery-powered smart home sensors and devices. The Thread Group anticipates this change will accelerate the adoption of Thread as a foundational technology for the connected home ecosystem.
