San Diego School Buys $500,000 in Humanoid Robots

Altus Schools, a San Diego charter school chain, purchased two Ameca humanoid robots for $500,000, with the robots expected to be on-site by fall. Principal Cathryn Rambo stated in an email reviewed by Voice of San Diego that the school is researching the use of physical AI as a teaching partner. These robots are intended for use in resource centers where students typically receive one-on-one lessons. Altus Schools are designed for students who have fallen behind academically and need to fast-track classes to catch up.

The Ameca robots are described as "the world’s most advanced AI-powered humanoid robot" and are equipped with ChatGPT capabilities. Each robot can adopt four different personas: Sage the Teacher, Ari the College and Career Planner, Lexi the Translator, and Remi the Wellness Coach. The wellness coach persona, in particular, has raised concerns among parents and community members.

Concerns stem from the fact that Altus Schools serve students who may come from at-risk environments, potentially experiencing higher stress, anxiety, and self-esteem issues. The possibility of students forming unhealthy relationships with an AI wellness coach is a significant worry. A 2025 study by Common Sense Media and Stanford University highlighted "very serious risks" associated with AI companion platforms for teens, noting their ability to simulate real relationships and foster emotional bonds, which could exacerbate mental health struggles and hinder the development of real-world friendships.
