CipherX Unveils "World's First Painless Tattoo" System Using Dissolvable Microneedles

London-based startup CipherX has introduced a groundbreaking innovation in body art with its "world's first painless tattoo" system, unveiled at a recent event in the city. Founded in December 2020 by Ferdinand Kohle, CipherX aims to fundamentally alter the traditional tattooing process, which often involves significant pain and a lengthy recovery period. Kohle, who has personal phobias of blood and needles, was inspired to explore microneedle technology, a field already established in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries for applications like drug delivery and facial treatments. His vision was to adapt this technology for tattooing, merging modern engineering, manufacturing, and human-centered design principles.

The CipherX microdot tattoo system comprises three key components: a loading dock, a handheld applicator, and a specialized patch. This patch is embedded with the chosen tattoo design, translated into a series of microscopic needles. During application, the handheld applicator is used to press the patch firmly onto the skin. The microneedles then rapidly transfer the pigment into the skin's upper layers. Kohle likens the process to a sandcastle: the needles, designed to stand until activated, dissolve upon contact with the skin, much like a sandcastle succumbs to water. This mechanism is central to the system's claim of being painless, as it bypasses the repetitive puncturing associated with conventional tattoo machines.

Once the pigment transfer is complete, the patch remains on the skin for approximately 10 to 15 minutes before being easily peeled away, leaving the initial tattoo imprint. The design appears faint at first, with the full, developed tattoo gradually emerging over the next couple of days as the pigment fully integrates and settles within the skin. CipherX emphasizes a significantly simplified aftercare regimen. Unlike traditional tattoos that require wrapping and meticulous cleaning to prevent infection, these microdot tattoos need only basic cleanliness for the first 24 hours. This means avoiding strenuous activities such as sauna sessions or intense gym workouts that could compromise the healing process.

After nearly six years of dedicated research and development, CipherX is now making its technology accessible to the public. Initial appointments are available at the company's CX Flagship Store located in West London. Furthermore, CipherX plans to expand its reach through strategic collaborations, pop-up events, and partnerships with select venues. Currently, customers can choose from a curated selection of pre-designed motifs. Among these is the smiley face, which holds the distinction of being the very first design developed by the company. Another surprisingly popular choice, according to Kohle, is a simple chair design. Looking ahead, Kohle expresses a desire to collaborate with professional tattoo artists to expand the design library, while ensuring the core technology remains proprietary to CipherX.
