Pennsylvania Train Offers 'Holy Grail of Fall Foliage' Experience

The East Broad Top Railroad (EBT) in Rockhill Furnace, Pennsylvania, provides a distinctive fall foliage viewing experience via vintage train rides. Construction on this narrow-gauge line began in 1872, and it operated as a coal hauler until 1956. Upon ceasing freight service, the site was largely preserved, leading to its designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1964. The railroad was later restored and resumed operations as a heritage railroad in 2021, now standing as the sole surviving three-foot-gauge common carrier railroad east of the Rocky Mountains.

While the EBT offers excursions throughout the year, its fall season is particularly noted for its scenic beauty. Through October 31, trains depart from Orbisonia Station on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 10:30 AM, 12 PM, and 1:30 PM, with additional 3 PM departures on select dates. All weekend trains are powered by a century-old, coal-fired steam locomotive, enhancing the nostalgic atmosphere.

The signature fall excursion is the Northbound Colgate Grove Excursion. This nine-mile, one-hour roundtrip journey traverses the farmland and forests of the Aughwick Valley. Passengers have the option to disembark at Colgate Grove, the midpoint of the route, for a 1.5-hour picnic amidst the autumn colors.
