Underground Mapping Startup Secures $26 Million Series A

Subterranean mapping startup Ground Penetrating Technologies (GPT) announced on March 12, 2024, that it has secured $26 million in Series A funding. This investment round was led by venture capital firm Bessemer Venture Partners, with participation from existing investors including Kleiner Perkins and Andreessen Horowitz. The company, founded by former Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) engineer Alex Johnson, aims to create a comprehensive digital map of underground infrastructure, often referred to as a 'Google Maps for the underground.'

GPT's technology utilizes a combination of ground-penetrating radar (GPR), lidar, and other sensor data to create detailed 3D models of buried utilities such as water pipes, gas lines, electrical cables, and telecommunications networks. This data is then integrated into a cloud-based platform accessible to utility companies, construction firms, and municipal governments. The primary goal is to reduce the significant risks and costs associated with accidental damage to underground infrastructure during excavation and construction projects. Such damage can lead to service disruptions, environmental hazards, and substantial financial losses, with estimates suggesting that utility strikes cost the US economy billions of dollars annually.

The newly acquired capital will be used to expand GPT's customer base across North America, further develop its proprietary mapping technology, and scale its operations. The company also intends to invest in enhancing its data analytics capabilities, providing clients with predictive insights into infrastructure integrity and maintenance needs. Johnson stated in a press release that the funding will enable GPT to "revolutionize how underground infrastructure is managed, making it safer, more efficient, and more transparent."
