Fan-Made Lego Akira Bike Banned by Lego Policies

Eastern Brick, a collective of adult fans, has produced a fully buildable Lego replica of Kaneda's motorcycle from Katsuhiro Otomo's seminal 1988 anime film, Akira. This detailed model captures the iconic design of the vehicle, which is a central visual element of the cyberpunk genre. The creation highlights a significant divergence between fan desires and Lego's corporate policies regarding product content. Eastern Brick stated that Lego "will never make this because of their family-friendly policies," citing the "too violent" nature of the Akira universe and its "cyberpunk themes" which are "too realistic with their weapons and violence." The group emphasizes their motivation as "fans wanting to build for other adult fans."

Lego's corporate guidelines, as published in 2010, aim to "avoid realistic weapons and military equipment that children may recognize from hot spots around the world and to refrain from showing violent or frightening situations when communicating about Lego products." Despite this, Lego has licensed products featuring fictional conflict, such as Star Wars blasters, Marvel superheroes, and wizard battles, indicating a distinction between fantasy and realistic violence. The company's stance on realistic weaponry was further demonstrated when it canceled a planned Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft set after a German anti-war group protested its use by the U.S. military. The gritty, human-centric violence depicted in Akira, including biker gangs, drug use, and military coups in Neo-Tokyo, is considered to fall outside Lego's acceptable content parameters.

The release of this fan-made Kaneda bike coincides with a restored 4K and IMAX rerelease of Akira in September, bringing renewed attention to the film's enduring cultural impact. The original film is credited with not only redefining anime but also significantly shaping the visual language of the cyberpunk aesthetic. The motorcycle itself has become an instantly recognizable symbol of the film and the genre. Eastern Brick's project is part of a broader, unofficial "shadow industry" of fan-created Lego sets that push the boundaries of what Lego officially produces, catering to adult collectors and enthusiasts who seek more mature or niche themes.
