Hayabusa2 and Tianwen-2 Reach Asteroids This Weekend

On Sunday, the Japanese spacecraft Hayabusa2, which had previously completed its primary sample-return mission, successfully conducted a flyby of the peanut-shaped asteroid Torifune as part of an extended mission. This event occurred while the United States was celebrating its 250th birthday.
Hours after Hayabusa2's encounter, the Chinese space agency announced that its Tianwen-2 spacecraft had reached its target asteroid. This arrival followed a journey spanning 1 billion kilometers. The Tianwen-2 mission aims to collect samples from this small asteroid and return them to Earth by late next year.
These two missions highlight ongoing international efforts in asteroid exploration and sample return, building on previous successes and expanding scientific understanding of these celestial bodies.
