The U.S. Now Has Over 250,000 EV Charging Ports

The United States surpassed 250,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging ports as of May 2024, according to data from the U.S. Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center. This total encompasses both Level 2 charging stations, which are common in homes and workplaces, and DC fast chargers that offer significantly quicker charging times. The expansion of charging infrastructure is a key component of the Biden administration's strategy to promote EV adoption and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, signed into law in November 2021, allocated $7.5 billion to build out a national network of 500,000 EV chargers by 2030. While the 250,000-port milestone represents substantial progress, it indicates that approximately half of the administration's charging goal has been met with less than six years remaining. The growth in charging ports is intended to alleviate range anxiety and make EV ownership more practical for a wider range of consumers.
