Palau, a tropical archipelago nation with a population of approximately 18,000 residents and no traffic lights, is hosting the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting. The event is expected to see the nation's population temporarily increase to 20,000 with the arrival of delegates from dozens of countries. Ahead of the summit's official opening on Monday, the country's president, Surangel Whipps Jr., and other senior officials were observed participating in local preparations, including cleaning the main road. Local businesses and individuals are also contributing, with barbers and tattoo artists preparing to assist delegates and student volunteers tasked with ushering dignitaries. The summit's setting, characterized by a distinctively Pacific approach to decision-making through consensus rather than voting, is underscored by an underlying geopolitical tension concerning influence in the vast ocean region.
