DOT Recruits Gamers to Address Air Traffic Controller Shortage

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has launched a successful initiative to recruit video game enthusiasts to address a decade-long shortage of air traffic controllers. This shortage has contributed to flight delays and increased risks for air travelers. The DOT's program, initiated in 2025, has seen Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy report on social media that the recruitment of gamers has helped the department meet 94% of its hiring goal for new controllers, achieving a record-setting hiring pace. Over 2,000 individuals have been hired through this program, with candidates progressing to the Academy faster than in previous classes. It is important to note that these hires are trainees and are not yet guiding aircraft. The comprehensive training program for air traffic controllers takes two years to complete, and approximately one-third of trainees do not finish the program. Despite these challenges, the DOT continues to view gamers as a valuable recruitment pool, with Secretary Duffy citing their problem-solving skills, spatial awareness, and ability to multitask as key attributes. The median salary for air traffic controllers in 2024 was $144,580, and the educational requirement is an associate's degree. However, employment stability has been impacted by government shutdowns, with controllers working without pay for 43 days in the previous year, though back pay was eventually provided. Furthermore, hundreds of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) jobs have been eliminated over the past two years. The nature of the job itself is highly stressful, as air traffic control is considered one of the most demanding occupations in the United States, with decisions carrying life-or-death consequences. The equipment utilized by controllers is frequently outdated, and many work six days a week. The DOT's innovative recruitment strategy aims to mitigate these ongoing staffing issues by tapping into a demographic known for its aptitude in complex, real-time decision-making and multitasking environments. This approach represents a novel solution to a persistent challenge within the nation's aviation infrastructure, seeking to bolster the ranks of essential personnel through non-traditional recruitment channels.
