The Steam Machine is the start of an even more expensive future for game consoles
Valve announced the Steam Deck OLED on November 9, 2023, introducing a new model of its handheld gaming PC with an upgraded display and other enhancements. This new version features a larger 7.4-inch OLED screen, a significant improvement over the original 7-inch LCD panel, offering better contrast and vibrant colors. The Steam Deck OLED also boasts a longer battery life, with Valve claiming up to 12 hours of gameplay compared to the original's 8 hours, attributed to a larger 50Whr battery and more efficient APU. The device's thermal management has also been improved, with a larger fan and updated thermal solution designed to reduce noise and maintain cooler operating temperatures. Additionally, the Steam Deck OLED includes faster Wi-Fi 6E connectivity, a lighter chassis weighing 30 grams less, and a revised thumbstick design for improved durability and feel. While the core functionality and performance remain similar to the original LCD model, these upgrades come with a price adjustment, with the 512GB Steam Deck OLED priced at $549, and a limited 1TB version available for $649, reflecting the increasing cost of premium components in the gaming hardware market.
