Attic Insulation Fixes Slash Summer Energy Bills

Attic Insulation Fixes Slash Summer Energy Bills

Many homeowners experiencing warm indoor temperatures during summer mistakenly attribute the issue to their air conditioning systems. However, a significant contributor to discomfort and high energy bills can be poor attic insulation and unsealed air leaks, which allow cool air to escape and hot attic air to infiltrate the living space. Lane Martin, co-founder at Modern PURAIR, advises that improving insulation and sealing leaks can make a substantial difference, often negating the need for expensive HVAC equipment upgrades.

Attics can reach extreme temperatures, frequently between 130 and 150 degrees Fahrenheit on hot summer days. When insulation is inadequate, this intense heat directly transfers to the rooms below. Scott Eyman, project manager at Eyman Plumbing, Heating, & Air, notes that unsealed openings around attic access points, recessed lighting, and ductwork create pathways for cooled air to leak out and hot attic air to enter. This forces air conditioners to work harder and longer, similar to trying to cool a house with open windows.

Addressing these issues can be relatively inexpensive and straightforward. A primary step involves ensuring the attic hatch seals tightly. Replacing worn weatherstripping on the hatch can cost as little as $10 to $20 in materials. Homeowners should also inspect for and seal obvious openings where pipes, electrical wiring, or ductwork pass through the attic floor. These simple fixes can prevent cool air from escaping and hot air from entering, leading to a more comfortable home and reduced energy consumption throughout the summer months.
