Affordable Glasses Boost Garment Worker Productivity, Unlock Gains

Providing affordable reading glasses to garment workers in Bangladesh has demonstrated significant improvements in productivity and accuracy, with the potential to unlock billions in economic gains. Ruma Aktar, a sewing machine operator in Bangladesh, reported that a pair of reading glasses transformed her work by enabling her to thread needles faster and reducing eye strain and headaches. This enhanced precision leads to fewer alterations and improved garment quality.

The garment sector in Bangladesh is a critical part of its economy, contributing approximately 11% of the gross domestic product and employing around 4 million workers. VisionSpring, a nonprofit social enterprise focused on providing affordable eyewear in developing countries, estimates that one in three garment workers in Bangladesh require glasses but do not have access to them. Through a partnership with the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, VisionSpring has supplied glasses costing less than $10 per pair to workers.

Ella Gudwin, CEO of VisionSpring, stated that the benefits of these glasses are immediate, allowing workers to meet quality and production targets more effectively. Improved vision helps reduce errors such as skipped stitches, uneven hems, and misplaced buttons, thereby decreasing the need for rework. This directly impacts the efficiency and output of garment factories.

Fahima Akhter, a director at Masco Group, a Bangladeshi garment company, noted that managers initially underestimated the prevalence of vision problems among their workforce because workers rarely complained. Masco Group has since screened approximately 5,000 workers, with about 30% receiving glasses. The company plans to expand this vision program to its entire workforce, recognizing the substantial positive impact on both worker well-being and operational efficiency.
