The Odyssey Dominates IMAX Screens Amidst High Demand

Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" is maintaining significant momentum in its theatrical run, extending its success into its second and third weeks of release. The film's demand is so high that audiences are actively seeking out information on social media for new ticket releases, even for showings at unconventional hours such as 6 a.m. AMC Theatres has reported that "The Odyssey," which was filmed entirely using IMAX 70 mm film cameras and is intended for viewing on IMAX 1.43:1 screens, is setting new box-office records. In its initial two weeks, it has become the "most successful IMAX run in AMC's history."

The film achieved a substantial opening weekend in the U.S., grossing $124.5 million. Over its second weekend, it added another $87 million, bringing its North American total to approximately $286 million. Globally, "The Odyssey" had earned around $640 million as of Sunday, July 26. AMC has indicated that IMAX screens are a critical contributor to these impressive ticket sales figures. The challenge for many moviegoers lies in securing tickets for showings at the limited number of theaters, specifically 25 locations in the U.S. and 41 internationally, that are equipped to screen the adaptation of the Greek epic in IMAX 70mm format.

Reports from Variety last week highlighted the scarcity of tickets, with 70mm screening tickets sold out through August 19 in New York and Los Angeles, and through September 10 in London. AMC, which operates approximately half of the IMAX screens in the U.S., has also stated that many of its 70mm showings are fully booked nationwide through mid-August. In New York City, discussions on Reddit reveal moviegoers sharing information about ticket availability and expressing frustration with the ticketing system, with one user lamenting, "I can’t live like this." Despite these technological frustrations, some New Yorkers have found hope at the AMC Lincoln Square 13, where the film has been playing continuously from Friday through Sunday. Securing tickets at this location appears to require a more traditional approach, with one Redditor suggesting that waiting in line might guarantee a ticket.
