Met Cancels John Galliano Exhibition After Backlash

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has canceled its planned Spring 2026 exhibition, titled "John Galliano: Horizons," following significant public backlash over the designer's past racist remarks. The decision was announced less than a month after the exhibition's initial unveiling by The Met Costume Institute. In a joint statement released by the museum, Galliano, Vogue editor Anna Wintour, and curator Andrew Bolton, the parties collectively agreed not to proceed with the show.

John Galliano expressed his sadness regarding the cancellation, stating, "After much reflection and discussion with The Met and all those involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time." He reiterated his accountability for past hurtful words, specifically acknowledging the pain caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and offered a deep apology. These remarks date back to 2011, when a video emerged of Galliano making racist statements at a Paris cafe. This incident led to his dismissal from the role of Creative Director at Dior, his removal from his eponymous label, and a legal fine of 6,000 euros.

Galliano has since re-entered the fashion industry, taking on the role of Creative Director at Maison Margiela in 2014. More recently, in 2026, he entered into a collaborative collection agreement with Zara. Andrew Bolton, the curator in charge of The Met Costume Institute, also contributed to the joint statement. He emphasized the museum's responsibility to "examine difficult histories with rigor, candor, and care" and acknowledged the "pain and concern" the exhibition had generated. Bolton concluded by stating his support for the decision not to proceed after extensive discussions.
