Katia Beauchamp Launches Buff Beauty to Replace Manicures

Katia Beauchamp, co-founder of the beauty subscription service Birchbox, has launched a new brand called Buff Beauty. The company aims to make regular salon manicures unnecessary by offering products that promote healthy and attractive nails. Buff Beauty debuts with 21 products, including tools and treatments, available on its official website. Beauchamp explicitly stated that the brand will not produce nail polish.

Beauchamp, who co-founded Birchbox in 2010 with Hayley Barna while attending Harvard Business School, previously led the company through its growth as a direct-to-consumer beauty sample service. Birchbox raised $90 million in capital and achieved a valuation of $485 million in 2014, reaching over a million subscribers. However, the company faced increased competition from services like Ipsy and retailers such as Sephora and Ulta, leading to layoffs in 2016. Birchbox underwent ownership changes, with Viking Global taking control in 2018, followed by an acquisition by FemTec Health for $45 million in 2021, and a subsequent sale to Retention Brands in 2023. Beauchamp departed Birchbox prior to these later transactions.

The launch of Buff Beauty addresses a significant consumer habit. A recent survey indicated that 96% of American women regularly polish their fingernails, with 47% doing so at salons. Many women also perceive unvarnished nails as unprofessional. The manicure industry represents a substantial market, estimated at $25 billion. Beauchamp's new venture seeks to tap into this market by providing an alternative that prioritizes nail health and appearance, reducing the need for frequent salon visits.
