LEGO Recreates Iconic 1994 PlayStation Console with Functional Buttons and Game Dioramas

Sony and the LEGO Group have joined forces to launch the LEGO PlayStation, an intricate brick-built replica of the groundbreaking original PlayStation console and its iconic controller. This highly anticipated set, revealed during the September 3 State of Play broadcast, marks the first time enthusiasts have the opportunity to construct the debut PlayStation hardware piece by piece. It stands as a significant tribute to a platform that has profoundly shaped the gaming landscape for over three decades, having been in players' hands since its initial release in 1994.

The LEGO PlayStation set comprises a substantial 1,911 pieces, meticulously designed to achieve a near 1:1 scale recreation of the original console. Once fully assembled, the model measures approximately 10.5 inches (26 cm) in width, offering a substantial and impressive display piece. However, this is far more than a static model. The set incorporates functional mechanisms, mirroring the original hardware's interactivity. Notably, the Power and Open buttons on the console are operational, allowing for a tactile experience. Furthermore, the included brick-built controller can be physically plugged into the console, adding a layer of engaging interactivity that extends beyond mere visual representation.

In a collaborative effort, PlayStation's internal teams worked closely with LEGO designers to embed a wealth of historical references within the construction process. These nods to the platform's origins are woven throughout the build, celebrating key moments and elements from PlayStation's rich history. Two of these significant references are presented as distinct, removable modules: detailed dioramas inspired by two seminal games that launched on the original PlayStation. The first diorama celebrates Gran Turismo, featuring a miniature race track complete with scaled-down vehicles, evoking the thrill of the pioneering racing simulator. The second diorama pays homage to Ape Escape, depicting a nostalgic island scene. This diorama includes a unique customizable element: a swappable light for the monkey's helmet, which can be set to either blue or red, referencing the game's aesthetic. These dioramas are designed to be detachable, allowing them to be displayed independently or as part of the larger console build. Each diorama also features customizable elements, enhancing the set's versatility and enabling it to function as three interconnected display pieces rather than a single, fixed sculpture.

By meticulously recreating the 1994 hardware and thoughtfully incorporating elements from Gran Turismo and Ape Escape, the LEGO PlayStation set is strategically designed to appeal to a broad spectrum of fans.
