Gurren Lagann Team Announces New Anime Project

Studio Trigger announced on July 5, 2026, its fourth original anime collaboration with director Hiroyuki Imaishi and screenwriter Kazuki Nakashima. This duo is renowned for their work on acclaimed titles such as Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill, and the 2019 film Promare. The announcement was made via an official production commentary video, where Imaishi and Nakashima addressed the seven-year hiatus since their last joint project, Promare.

Imaishi and Nakashima explained that the extended development period was due to various standalone projects and scheduling conflicts that kept them working separately. However, a clear development path has now solidified for their new endeavor. While the specific title and visual designs for the project remain undisclosed, Nakashima confirmed that his screenplay is complete. Imaishi has already begun conceptualizing the initial storyboards based on this script.

Nakashima described the upcoming anime as a significant culmination of their long-standing creative partnership, characterizing his finished script as a comprehensive collection of their accumulated knowledge and experience. Imaishi further elaborated on the project's ambitious scope, stating that it will channel their pent-up creative energy into a dynamic synthesis of their signature thematic elements, while also incorporating novel narrative techniques they have not previously explored.
