The latest benefit of obesity drugs: boosting testosterone and sperm quality
GLP-1 medications, commonly prescribed for obesity and type 2 diabetes, may also improve testosterone levels and sperm quality in men, according to a preliminary study published in Nature on June 15, 2026. Researchers observed that men taking these drugs, such as semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and liraglutide (Victoza, Saxenda), experienced either an increase or stabilization of their testosterone levels. This finding suggests a potential dual benefit for these widely used medications beyond their metabolic effects. The study analyzed data from 102 men, with 51 receiving GLP-1 receptor agonists and 51 receiving a placebo. Among those on GLP-1 drugs, 70% showed improved testosterone levels, compared to only 15% in the placebo group. Furthermore, sperm concentration and motility also saw improvements in the GLP-1 group. While these results are promising, the study authors emphasize that more extensive clinical trials are needed to confirm these effects and understand the underlying mechanisms. The research team plans to conduct a larger, randomized controlled trial involving 500 participants over a six-month period to further investigate the impact of GLP-1 medications on male reproductive health.
