Hinge Founder Launches AI Matchmaker Overtone With $18M

Justin McLeod, the founder of the dating app Hinge, has launched a new AI-infused matchmaking company called Overtone. This week, McLeod announced that Overtone has raised $18 million to support its launch later in 2026. The funding comes from investors including FirstMark Capital, Pace Capital, and Match Group, which owns several prominent dating apps like Tinder, OkCupid, and Hinge.

McLeod stated in a blog post that Overtone is not a traditional dating app but rather a modern interpretation of matchmaking services. Unlike typical social platforms, Overtone will not rely on user profiles reduced to statistics, quotes, and photos, nor will it feature opaque algorithmic feeds driven by split-second impulses. The service also aims to avoid the common practice of users juggling multiple likes, matches, and chats simultaneously.

Instead, Overtone will focus on learning each user's "story" through their own voice, which inspired the company's audio-based name. The AI will then make curated introductions exclusively to users it deems "worth making," based on relationship science and thoughtful reflection. McLeod expressed both concern and optimism regarding AI's role in dating, writing, "The opportunities and perils of AI are staggering. I worry deeply about its misuse, especially around something as intimate and sacred as love. At the same time, if approached thoughtfully and ethically, I believe we now have the chance to create an entirely new and better paradigm in dating."

Overtone is set to launch later in 2026 in select locations. The company's approach signifies a departure from the swipe-based mechanics and profile-centric interactions prevalent in many current dating applications, aiming for a more in-depth and scientifically grounded matchmaking process.
