Galaxy Z Fold8 Survives JerryRigEverything Durability Test

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 has successfully passed the stringent durability tests conducted by Zack Nelson, the host of the popular YouTube channel JerryRigEverything. Nelson subjected the foldable smartphone to a series of challenges designed to simulate real-world wear and tear, including exposure to sand, the use of sharp blades, and a significant bending force. The results, published on August 14, 2024, indicate that the Z Fold8 exhibits a notable resilience, particularly in its folding mechanism and display.

During the scratch test, which involves using a Mohs hardness pick to gauge the display's resistance to scratches, the Z Fold8's inner screen began to show marks at a hardness level of 2. This is a common characteristic for flexible displays, which are typically made of ultra-thin glass (UTG) or a plastic polymer layer to allow for folding. The outer screen, however, performed more comparably to conventional smartphone displays. The hinge mechanism, a critical component for any foldable device, was also put to the test. Nelson repeatedly opened and closed the device, simulating thousands of folds, and the hinge continued to function without apparent degradation. This suggests Samsung has made advancements in the longevity and robustness of its folding hardware.

The sand test, designed to assess the device's ability to withstand particulate ingress, revealed that sand could indeed get into the hinge mechanism. While this is a known challenge for foldable phones, the Z Fold8's design appeared to manage the intrusion without immediately compromising the hinge's operation. Nelson demonstrated that by manipulating the device, some of the sand could be dislodged. The blade test involved scratching the screen and the body of the phone with a sharp blade. The inner screen, as expected, showed damage from the blade, while the outer screen and frame also sustained visible scratches, consistent with the materials used in its construction.

Perhaps the most dramatic test was the bend test, where Nelson applied significant pressure to the device in both the folded and unfolded states. The Z Fold8, when bent backward in its folded configuration, showed no signs of damage, a testament to the structural integrity of its hinge and internal components. When bent forward, the device also held up, indicating a robust internal frame and display assembly. The overall performance in the JerryRigEverything test suggests that the Galaxy Z Fold8 is a durable device, capable of withstanding common everyday stresses and more extreme accidental damage, positioning it as a reliable option in the premium foldable smartphone market.
