Melissa & Doug Launches Top-Down Dollhouse for Toddlers

Melissa & Doug introduced the Cheery Lane dollhouse line this week, featuring a novel top-down design intended for children aged 2 to 4 years old. This innovative approach moves away from the traditional cutaway dollhouse, which often presents challenges for very young children due to its enclosed structure and the need to reach into narrow openings. Sofia Dumery, head of design at Melissa & Doug, explained that the conventional design can lead to frustration as toddlers attempt to place figures or furniture, often knocking over elements or struggling to see the action within the house.

The Cheery Lane dollhouse addresses these issues with four small rooms that have short corner walls and no ceilings. This open-top configuration allows for easy access from above, enabling toddlers to place figurines, furniture, and household objects without difficulty. The design is specifically tailored to the developmental stage of 2- to 4-year-olds, accommodating their developing motor skills and play patterns. The line includes easily gripped figurines and furnished rooms, promoting nurturing and imaginative play.

Dumery highlighted that the top-down access simplifies activities like placing a figure in the bathtub or tucking it into bed, which are common and beloved actions for this age group. The design also incorporates accessible doors and windows, which toddlers enjoy opening and closing. The company conducted extensive field testing with children in daycare centers to refine the concept, ensuring it aligned with Melissa & Doug's commitment to open-ended play opportunities for younger children.
