Syn Zhuang Wins Jordan Design Studio With Air Jordan 1 Redesign

Beijing designer Syn Zhuang has been named the winner of the inaugural Jordan Design Studio program, a global initiative launched by Jordan Brand in July to reimagine the iconic Air Jordan 1 silhouette. Zhuang's winning design emphasizes versatility and a women-focused approach, incorporating a transformable suede collar and a softer toe box for enhanced everyday comfort. The program invited creatives from major global cities including Seoul, Tokyo, Mexico City, New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Beijing, and Shanghai, providing them with mentorship to develop original design concepts. These concepts were inspired by themes of identity, community, heritage, ambition, and local culture, reflecting the diverse backgrounds of the participating designers.

Zhuang's reimagined Air Jordan 1 stood out among eight finalists, with her design being selected at Jordan's "The One" event held in Shanghai on August 31. The winning creation was developed in collaboration with mentors Yue Wu and Ji Ming. On her personal Instagram page, Zhuang articulated her design philosophy, stating, "A classic doesn't have to be one fixed form. It can exist in different ways, to reach different people. I wanted this shoe to offer a little sense of ease — not laziness, not giving up, just a feeling that it's okay to loosen up and be yourself." This sentiment underscores her intention to make the classic sneaker more approachable and adaptable.

The most striking feature of Zhuang's Air Jordan 1 redesign is its transformable suede collar. This innovative element conceals the traditional toe box and lacing system. When worn in its upright position, the collar reveals a backward-facing Swoosh, which is mirrored by a perforated Swoosh on the shoe's lateral panel. Conversely, when the collar is folded over, the upper Swoosh aligns to face the correct direction. Zhuang further elaborated on the design's details, noting her preservation of the heel's subtle curve, which she described as "carrying a hint of elegance, almost like a heel." She also detailed her modifications to the toe area, stating, "I covered the toe fully and made it rounder, softer, less sharp," aiming for a more comfortable and less aggressive aesthetic compared to the original.

The Jordan Design Studio program aimed to foster new perspectives on a timeless sneaker, encouraging designers to infuse their personal stories and cultural influences into their work. The selection process involved evaluating designs based on their innovation, cultural relevance, and potential for everyday wearability. Syn Zhuang's victory highlights a growing trend in footwear design that prioritizes adaptability, comfort, and inclusivity, particularly for female consumers. Her interpretation of the Air Jordan 1 successfully balances heritage with contemporary needs, offering a fresh take on a beloved icon.
