The $5,000 Hidden Summer Fee Owners of Older Homes Forget To Budget For

Tree roots pose a significant and costly threat to older homes, particularly during summer months when they aggressively seek moisture. These roots can infiltrate and damage aging clay or cast-iron sewer lines, which were typically installed before 1980 and have a lifespan of around 50 years, meaning most are now well past their prime. Scott Eyman, project manager at Eyman Plumbing, Heating, & Air, states that tree root invasion is a frequent and expensive plumbing issue encountered in older properties. Failure to address these subterranean warning signs can lead to catastrophic sewer backups, potentially costing homeowners $5,000 or more for complete repairs. The roots exploit hairline cracks in these older pipes, growing and expanding until they obstruct water flow or fracture the pipe itself. Aaron Adams, master plumber and CEO of Aaron Services, has observed root masses measuring 3 to 4 feet in length and 4 inches in diameter. Homeowners can identify potential problems through symptoms such as multiple slow drains occurring simultaneously, gurgling toilets when water is draining elsewhere, and the presence of sewage odors emanating from the lawn. Unusually lush or rapidly growing grass patches above the sewer line can also indicate root intrusion. Professional sewer line scoping or video inspection is recommended to diagnose the exact nature of the problem.
