Tesla Starts FSD v14 Lite Rollout to HW3 Cars

Tesla has begun deploying its Full Self-Driving (FSD) v14 “Lite” software to vehicles equipped with Hardware 3 (HW3), as confirmed by the company's AI chief, Ashok Elluswamy, today. This new build, identified by firmware version 2026.20.5.1, is initially being distributed to drivers enrolled in the early-access program. This marks the first significant Full Self-Driving update for the approximately 4 million HW3 vehicles that have been operating on FSD v12.6 since early 2025. Despite the update, the system remains a Level 2, supervised driving system that requires active driver engagement.

The rollout of FSD v14 “Lite” is a notable development for Tesla owners with older hardware, as it had been over a year since these vehicles received a substantial FSD upgrade. The previous version, v12.6, had been the stable build for HW3 cars since early 2025, leaving a segment of Tesla's fleet without the latest advancements in the company's autonomous driving technology. The "Lite" designation suggests that this version may incorporate some of the newer features or improvements from the latest FSD iterations but is optimized for the capabilities of the HW3 computer.

Ashok Elluswamy, who holds the position of AI chief at Tesla, provided the confirmation of the rollout. His statement underscores the company's ongoing efforts to iterate and distribute its FSD software across its vehicle lineup. While the update brings new capabilities, Tesla continues to emphasize that FSD is a driver-assistance feature and not a fully autonomous system. Drivers are expected to maintain full control and attention, with hands on the steering wheel at all times. The company's strategy involves a phased rollout, prioritizing early-access users before wider distribution.
