Tesla Partially Settles Racism Lawsuit, Hundreds of Workers and State Agency Continue Legal Fight

Tesla has reached confidential settlements with three of the five named plaintiffs in a significant racism lawsuit that originated in 2017 concerning alleged discriminatory practices at its Fremont, California factory. Concurrently, California's Department of Civil Rights (CRD), a state agency tasked with enforcing civil rights laws and protecting Californians from unlawful discrimination, is pursuing its own separate legal action against Tesla. This state-led case is slated to proceed to a jury trial, aiming to address systemic issues of racial discrimination and retaliation experienced by Black employees at the Fremont plant. The Fremont factory, a sprawling manufacturing hub for Tesla and a critical component of its production capacity for vehicles like the Model 3 and Model Y, has been under intense scrutiny for its labor practices and workplace culture for several years.

The settlements, though confidential, represent a step towards resolving some of the individual claims brought forth in the initial lawsuit.
