TechCrunch Mobility: A new robotaxi scorecard shows China’s dominance

China's robotaxi sector has demonstrated significant dominance, according to a new scorecard released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) this week. The report, which evaluated 11 robotaxi companies, highlighted that 8 of the top 10 companies globally are based in China. Baidu's Apollo Go led the pack, achieving 2.77 million orders in the first half of 2024, a substantial increase from the 1.28 million orders it recorded in the same period last year. This growth positions Baidu as a leader in the autonomous driving ride-hailing market. Pony.ai, another prominent Chinese player, also saw substantial growth, reaching 1.17 million orders in the first half of 2024, up from 400,000 in the first half of 2023. The scorecard further revealed that Chinese companies are outpacing their international counterparts in terms of operational scale and deployment, with several cities in China actively supporting the development and commercialization of autonomous vehicles. The report's findings underscore the rapid advancements and investment in China's autonomous driving technology and its commercial application in the ride-hailing industry, suggesting a shift in global leadership within this emerging sector.
