AI Chatbots May Worsen Loneliness, Study Finds

Conversations with AI chatbots, while potentially perceived as enjoyable in the moment, may paradoxically exacerbate feelings of loneliness and reduce overall life satisfaction, according to a new experiment conducted by researchers affiliated with CESifo, a Munich-based global economic research network. The study, which involved 12,365 French adults over a 28-day period, aimed to investigate the impact of AI chatbot interactions on social well-being. Participants were divided into two groups: one tasked with holding personal conversations with AI chatbots for the duration of the experiment, and a control group that maintained their usual daily routines. At the conclusion of the four-week period, the researchers observed that the group engaging with AI chatbots reported their "conversations" as being more enjoyable and pleasant compared to the control group. However, this perceived enjoyment was counterbalanced by a significant increase in self-reported loneliness. Furthermore, this group also experienced a decline in life satisfaction and an uptick in depressive affect when contrasted with the control group. The study also indicated behavioral changes, with participants who conversed with chatbots reporting eating more meals alone and dedicating less time to in-person interactions with friends and family each week. Louis Fréget, one of the three researchers involved in the experiment, suggested that AI conversations might, in certain instances, reinforce existing grievances or prolong rumination, potentially diminishing an individual's inclination to seek out social engagement, make phone calls, or share meals with others. This research represents one of the most extensive causal tests to date examining the proposition, often advanced by technology leaders, that AI chatbots can serve as a remedy for the widespread issue of loneliness. This perspective has been echoed by figures such as Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who has posited that chatbots could fulfill the desire for increased social connection among individuals. A survey by KPMG further highlighted this interest, revealing that 99% of surveyed professionals expressed enthusiasm for a chatbot capable of becoming a close confidant at work. The findings suggest that the nature of the interaction itself plays a crucial role, as the lack of genuine human connection and shared personal history in AI interfaces may prevent them from providing the same depth of fulfillment as human relationships. The study underscores the complex psychological effects of human-AI interaction and questions the efficacy of chatbots as a sole solution to the loneliness epidemic.
