Cinemed-Aflamuna Incubator Selects Syrian, Lebanese, Palestinian Projects

France's Montpellier Mediterranean Film Festival, known as Cinemed, in collaboration with the Beirut-based Arab cinema platform Aflamuna, has announced the selected projects for its fifth annual project incubator event. This initiative, branded the Aflamuna x Cinemed Encounters, aims to support Arab filmmakers from the Middle East and North Africa region. The incubator will convene within the framework of the Cinemed festival, scheduled to take place in October. This year's selection highlights three distinct documentary projects that delve into critical social and historical themes.

The first selected project is "Tales of Syria's Disappeared," a film that will investigate the widespread phenomenon of enforced disappearances in Syria. This issue has been a significant concern since the onset of the Syrian civil war, with numerous individuals vanishing after being detained by state forces or other armed groups. The film is expected to shed light on the experiences of families searching for their missing loved ones and the broader implications of these disappearances on Syrian society. The project aims to bring greater international attention to this ongoing human rights crisis.

Secondly, "Lebanese Wartime Adoption" will explore the complex and often clandestine practices of adoption that occurred during Lebanon's protracted civil war, which lasted from 1975 to 1990. During this period of intense conflict and societal upheaval, many children were orphaned or separated from their families, leading to informal and sometimes legally ambiguous adoption processes. The documentary intends to uncover these stories, examining the emotional and legal ramifications for both the adopted children and the families involved, as well as the societal context that allowed these practices to flourish.

The third project, "Palestinian Mental Health," will focus on the psychological toll of ongoing conflict and displacement on the Palestinian population. Decades of occupation, intermittent violence, and restricted movement have had profound effects on the mental well-being of Palestinians across the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and refugee camps. This film is set to document the challenges faced by individuals and communities in accessing mental health support and to explore resilience and coping mechanisms in the face of persistent adversity. The project seeks to amplify the voices of Palestinians and highlight the often-overlooked mental health consequences of prolonged political conflict.

The Aflamuna x Cinemed Encounters provides a platform for these filmmakers to develop their projects through mentorship, networking opportunities, and potential funding.
