Kao USA Recalls Oribe Shampoo for Bacterial Contamination

Kao USA Inc. initiated a nationwide voluntary recall of two Oribe brand shampoo products last week due to potential contamination with the bacterium Pluralibacter gergoviae. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted the recall notice on its website one day after Kao's announcement. The bacterium can cause severe health consequences in susceptible individuals, particularly those with weakened immune systems, chronic illnesses, or who are undergoing surgical procedures.
The affected products are the Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo in both 8.5 oz and 33.8 oz sizes. The 8.5 oz bottles have the UPC 840035231242 and lot code YR010556. The 33.8 oz bottles have UPCs 840035231273 and lot codes YR010566 and YR010576. These products were manufactured between February 21, 2026, and February 26, 2026.
Pluralibacter gergoviae is known for its resistance to many common preservatives used in the cosmetics and personal care industry, according to Melbec Microbiology. While infections are rare in healthy individuals, this bacterium has been linked to serious conditions such as sepsis, eye infections, respiratory diseases, and urinary tract infections. The recall aims to prevent potential harm to consumers who may use the contaminated products.
