FDA Recalls Frozen Blueberries Linked to E. coli Outbreak

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a voluntary recall on July 6, 2024, for a specific frozen blueberry product manufactured by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. of San Carlos, Chile. This recall is a response to an ongoing, multistate E. coli outbreak that the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are investigating. The recalled product is GreenWise Organic IQF Blueberries, packaged in 10 oz bags with lot code 60401 and a best-by date of February 9, 2028. Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. has directed all customers to isolate and discontinue distribution of the affected lot.
The E. coli outbreak has been linked to these frozen blueberries, with investigations confirming 12 cases across two states. According to the CDC, one-third of these cases, totaling four individuals, have required hospitalization. The FDA's outbreak map indicates that illnesses have been reported in Florida and Georgia. Florida has reported 11 cases, while Georgia has reported one case. The agencies have cautioned that additional products may be added to the recall advisory as the investigation progresses, emphasizing that only one product is currently believed to be the source.
Consumers are strongly advised to avoid consuming the recalled GreenWise Organic IQF Blueberries. The voluntary recall was initiated by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. three days prior to the FDA's public notice. The company has instructed its customers to immediately isolate the product and notify any downstream customers who may have received the affected lot. Further updates and details regarding the investigation and potential additional recalls will be provided by the FDA and CDC as they become available.
