STAT+: Proposed CDC science office could tighten political control at agency

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is proposing to establish a new science office, the Executive Advisory, Science, and Operations Unit, which could increase political control over the agency's scientific output. This unit would be responsible for reviewing scientific publications, including the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, and briefings by the director on preparedness activities. The office would report to the agency's chief of staff, Matthew Buzzelli. Planning for this new office has been underway for several months, with efforts to identify funding. However, according to three individuals familiar with the planning who spoke to STAT anonymously, no funding has yet been secured, leaving the office's creation in limbo. In April, the CDC published a notice seeking contractors to assist with the proposed establishment of this unit.
