STAT+: FDA to launch pilot program to speed up early-stage clinical trials

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched a pilot program on Monday aimed at accelerating early-stage clinical trials. This initiative is projected to shorten drug development timelines by six to 12 months, with the goal of incentivizing clinical research within the United States and countering China's growing influence in the sector. The pilot program aligns with a proposal within the President's fiscal year 2027 budget request to Congress, which seeks to establish a permanent, expedited process for the Investigational New Drug (IND) pathway. Officials indicated that this program was under development prior to the resignation of former FDA Commissioner Marty Makary last month, although he had previously advocated for such a measure. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. stated in a Fox News op-ed that the U.S. is falling behind China in clinical research and presented these actions as a strategy to reverse this trend.
