Sri Lanka sees ‘alarming’ rise in cybercrime as scam networks relocate from south-east Asia

Sri Lanka is emerging as a hub for transnational cybercrime as criminal networks relocate from Southeast Asia, according to experts. These networks are reportedly drawn to Sri Lanka due to the ease of obtaining tourist visas and less stringent regulations on SIM cards and internet connections. Sri Lankan police spokesperson Fredrick Wootler stated that the country is experiencing an "alarming increase of cybercrimes" perpetrated by individuals entering as tourists who then illegally establish scam operations targeting victims globally. This shift follows a crackdown in Southeast Asian countries, which has prompted Chinese-run criminal networks to move their extensive scam operations. The situation highlights a growing concern for cybersecurity and regulatory oversight within Sri Lanka as it becomes a new base for these illicit activities.
