Spurs Sign Fernandes for Club-Record £85m

Tottenham Hotspur completed the signing of midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United this week. The transfer fee for the 24-year-old Portuguese international is reported to be £85 million, setting a new club record for Tottenham. Fernandes has signed a five-year contract with Spurs, keeping him at the club until 2029. He made 35 appearances for West Ham in the Premier League last season, scoring 5 goals and providing 7 assists. The midfielder was a key player for West Ham, contributing significantly to their midfield control and attacking output. His arrival is expected to bolster Tottenham's midfield options and add depth to the squad ahead of the upcoming season. The previous club record transfer fee was £60 million for Richarlison in 2022. Fernandes' transfer also represents one of the highest fees paid by a Premier League club for a midfielder in recent years. He joins Tottenham under manager Ange Postecoglou, who has been looking to strengthen his squad since taking over last year. The deal was finalized on July 15, 2024, following weeks of negotiations between the two clubs. Fernandes expressed his excitement about joining Tottenham and playing in the Champions League, a competition West Ham did not qualify for.
