Spain earned $51 million as the winner of the World Cup, while the runner-up, Argentina, received $34 million. FIFA distributed a record total of $871 million to all 48 participating teams in the 2026 tournament. This payout includes over $100 million added in April following lobbying from European federations to help cover extensive travel and lodging costs associated with the multi-country event.

All 48 national federations receive payments from FIFA, categorized into prize money bonuses based on tournament progression and across-the-board payments for training and preparation. Each team is guaranteed at least $12.5 million for competing, which comprises $10 million in prize money for qualifying and participating in the group stage, plus $2.5 million for pre-tournament training and expenses. This upfront payment was established in previous World Cups to mitigate pre-tournament disputes regarding bonus payments from federations.

The prize money increases significantly with each stage of advancement in the tournament. The increased amounts reflect demands from various federations, particularly those in Europe, who sought a revised prize money structure. Despite the substantial earnings for the winning nation, the $51 million prize for the World Cup winner is noted to be less than the earnings of the previous year's Club World Cup winner and smaller than some recent player transfer fees in global soccer.
