Spain Begins Gibraltar Airport Checks Post-Brexit

Spain began implementing checks at Gibraltar International Airport on Wednesday, marking a significant post-Brexit development for the UK territory. This move effectively integrates Gibraltar into the European Union's Schengen area, requiring passport and customs controls for individuals traveling between Gibraltar and Spain. The implementation of the EU's entry-exit system at the airport is intended to streamline border processes while adhering to new post-Brexit arrangements.

The new system will see Spanish civil guards and customs officials stationed at the airport, managing the flow of passengers. This integration into the Schengen zone aims to facilitate smoother travel and trade between Gibraltar and EU member states, a key objective following the UK's departure from the European Union. The agreement to establish these controls was reached between the UK and Spain in December 2023, following extensive negotiations.

Gibraltar's Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, stated that the new arrangements would ensure "frictionless travel" for residents and visitors, while also safeguarding the integrity of the border. The process involves the use of technology to manage the entry and exit of individuals, aligning with Schengen standards. The airport, which was previously under UK jurisdiction, will now operate under a dual control system.

This development signifies the practical application of the Brexit withdrawal agreement concerning Gibraltar. The territory, which voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU during the 2016 referendum, now navigates a new relationship with the bloc.
