Sony Launches FX5 Cinema Camera With Open Gate Recording

Sony launched the FX5 cinema camera this week, introducing a new option for professional videographers. The camera features a 10.2-megapixel full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor, designed to capture high-quality imagery in various lighting conditions. A key feature highlighted is its ability to perform open gate recording, allowing footage to be captured across the entire sensor area. This capability provides greater flexibility in post-production for reframing and aspect ratio adjustments.

The FX5 supports internal 4K 120p recording, enabling smooth slow-motion footage. It also offers 10-bit 4:2:2 color sampling, which preserves a wider range of color information and detail, crucial for professional color grading. The camera utilizes the BIONZ XR image processing engine, the same processor found in Sony's flagship Alpha 7R V and FX6 models, promising enhanced processing speed and overall performance. This engine contributes to improved autofocus capabilities and reduced rolling shutter effects.

For connectivity and workflow, the FX5 includes a 12G-SDI output, allowing for high-bandwidth video transmission. It also features dual CFexpress Type A card slots, supporting faster read/write speeds essential for high-resolution video recording. The camera body is designed with professional use in mind, incorporating a heat-dissipation system to prevent overheating during extended shooting sessions.
