Sony CEO: PlayStation 6 Launch Date Indefinitely Delayed

Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki confirmed that the company has not yet established an internal launch window or a definitive pricing strategy for the upcoming PlayStation 6 console. This indefinite delay is attributed to a global memory crisis that is significantly complicating hardware development timelines and component sourcing. The escalating costs of essential components, particularly RAM, are being driven by the immense demand from the burgeoning artificial intelligence sector, which requires substantial memory for its data centers. This surge in demand has already contributed to record-high pricing for the current-generation PlayStation 5. Industry analysts had previously projected a potential PlayStation 6 release around 2027, but the volatile semiconductor market and a pervasive global storage crisis have compelled Sony to postpone its plans. The acquisition of necessary components has become increasingly challenging as the artificial intelligence industry continues to dominate the global supply chain, consuming vast quantities of RAM and consequently inflating manufacturing expenses across the entire consumer technology industry. This economic pressure is already having a tangible effect on the pricing structure of the current console generation. Historically, console prices tend to decrease as they mature in their lifecycle; however, the PlayStation 5 has deviated from this trend. In April, Sony implemented a price increase for the PlayStation 5 hardware, raising the cost of the standard disc edition to $649.99, the Digital Edition to just under $600 USD, and the premium PS5 Pro model to a substantial $900 USD. Sony appears to be prioritizing business stability and profitability over adhering to fixed release schedules. Consequently, the company is hesitant to commit to specific pricing or production targets for the PlayStation 6 until the memory market demonstrates signs of stabilization. Further complicating the hardware development and release timeline is a recent, controversial decision regarding game preservation. Sony announced that it will permanently discontinue the production of physical game discs for all new titles commencing in January 2028. This strategic shift towards an exclusively digital ecosystem strongly suggests that the PlayStation 6 is unlikely to feature a disc drive. Such a move would effectively eliminate backwards compatibility for existing physical game libraries and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, impacting a significant portion of the current user base's media collection.
