Some Kansas Faculty Uneasy Over ‘Vague’ DEI Definitions

The Kansas Board of Regents approved new definitions for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives on June 24, 2026, to comply with a state budget bill passed earlier in the year. This action has led to unease among some faculty at the University of Kansas, who express concerns that the definitions are too vague and could lead to the dismantling of existing DEI programs. The new policy, which aims to define DEI in a way that avoids promoting specific ideologies or creating protected classes, has been met with criticism from free speech advocates. One such advocate described the policy as "educational censorship," suggesting it could stifle open discourse and academic freedom within the state's higher education institutions. The budget bill mandated that state agencies, including universities, define DEI and ensure these initiatives do not promote specific political viewpoints or create new protected classes, a directive that has prompted widespread re-evaluation of DEI frameworks across Kansas.
