Social Security Adds 14 Rare Conditions to Fast-Track Benefits

The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, that it has added 14 new medical conditions to its Compassionate Allowances list (CAL). This initiative is designed to expedite the process for individuals with severe medical conditions to receive disability benefits through the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs. The Compassionate Allowances program, first established in 2008, utilizes technology to quickly identify applicants whose medical records indicate one of these severe conditions, thereby streamlining the disability determination process.

With these 14 additions, the CAL now comprises a total of 314 conditions. The newly included conditions span various categories, including genetic disorders, cancers, and neurological conditions. Among the specific genetic disorders added are Adenylosuccinate Lyase Deficiency – Neonatal Form, Aicardi Syndrome Type 1, Baraitser-Winter Syndrome, Beare-Stevenson Cutis Gyrata Syndrome, Bohring-Opitz Syndrome, CASK-Related Gene Disorders, and OPHN1 Syndrome. The list also now includes Hepatosplenic T-Cell Lymphoma, Lafora Disease, and Malignant Migrating Partial Seizures of Infancy (MMPSI), alongside other conditions that meet the SSA's criteria for disability.

Social Security Administration Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano stated in the announcement that the agency is committed to strengthening its disability programs and enhancing the quality and speed of the disability determination process. He emphasized that the Compassionate Allowances initiative aims to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and provide timely support to individuals facing life-altering diagnoses. The agency's approach involves reviewing an applicant's medical records and, for CAL conditions, leveraging technology to quickly confirm eligibility. This allows for a faster delivery of essential financial assistance to those in need.

The Compassionate Allowances list serves as a critical tool for the SSA to identify individuals with conditions that, by their nature, meet the statutory definition of disability. This program is part of a broader effort by the SSA to improve its services and ensure that individuals with severe impairments can access benefits more efficiently.
