Becky Hill Reflects on a Difficult Twenties: "Aside from the music I was making, I hated every minute of it"

Singer-songwriter Becky Hill, born in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, in 1994, has candidly reflected on her experiences during her twenties, describing the decade as largely negative, with her music career being the sole exception. Hill's musical journey began at the age of 14 when she started performing in a band named Shaking Trees. Hill recounted that the entire process was designed to extract money, with each stage, from professional photoshoots to submitting applications and receiving feedback, incurring additional costs. Her family, not being financially affluent, meant her mother concealed the extent of these expenses from her father, who may still be unaware of the situation. The family repeatedly wired sums of around £100 to the agency without receiving any tangible benefits or opportunities in return. Ultimately, Hill abandoned any aspirations in modeling, humorously noting that her appearance was only suitable for a child.

In addition to financial exploitation, Hill has also bravely addressed the profound and lasting impact of sexual assault, revealing that she has been actively working to come to terms with this traumatic experience. She further described her twenties as a period intensely marked by the struggle with imposter syndrome. This psychological phenomenon, characterized by self-doubt regarding one's skills, talents, or accomplishments, and a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as a "fraud," coexisted with her rapidly growing professional success and increasing public recognition.
