Senate Confirms Todd Blanche as Attorney General

The Senate confirmed Todd Blanche as Attorney General in a vote held early Saturday morning, marking a significant development in President Donald Trump's administration. This confirmation cements the position of Trump's former personal attorney at the helm of the Justice Department, an agency Trump has reportedly sought to influence for his own purposes. Blanche's confirmation as the second Attorney General since Trump's return to the White House last year occurred with a 50-49 vote in the Republican-led Senate. Trump has previously expressed a desire to utilize the law enforcement agency to investigate his political adversaries. Although Blanche had been serving in an acting capacity, his official confirmation is expected to empower him to more aggressively pursue the Trump administration's agenda. Blanche expressed his gratitude on social media, stating he was "deeply honored by the trust and confidence President Trump has placed in me" and "grateful" to the senators for their late-night session to confirm him. The confirmation process was notably contentious, revealing significant concerns from both Democrats and some Republicans regarding the appointment of a close Trump ally to lead a Justice Department that has historically emphasized its independence from the White House. Ultimately, Blanche secured confirmation by a very narrow margin. Two Republican senators, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, voted against his confirmation, as did all Democratic senators. The path to confirmation for Blanche was particularly challenging, largely due to Republican apprehension surrounding a controversial settlement related to Trump's lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). In response to this pressure, Blanche made a public written commitment that the Justice Department would withdraw Trump's proposed $1.8 billion compensation fund. This fund was intended for Trump's allies, including individuals who participated in the events of January 6, 2021. Furthermore, Blanche pledged to curtail another aspect of the settlement that aimed to protect Trump and his family from IRS tax audits. These assurances were sufficient to gain the support of Republican Senator Bill Cassidy, who cast the decisive vote in favor of Blanche on Friday morning. Senator Cassidy indicated that no other nominee might be as capable of leading the department.
