Seiko Revives 1968 Diver DNA With New Marinemaster Watch
Seiko has introduced the Prospex Marinemaster 1968 Diver’s Reinterpretation SLA079J, a new professional-grade dive watch that revives the design DNA of its 1968 predecessor, the 6159-7001. This timepiece features a high-contrast black textured dial and a matching hard-coated steel unidirectional rotating bezel, maintaining the angular and robust case shape of earlier models while incorporating modern luxury finishing. The stainless steel case measures 42.6mm in diameter, 13.4mm in thickness, and 49.3mm lug-to-lug, designed for a substantial yet wearable presence.
Legibility in low-light conditions is enhanced by LumiBrite applied to the indices and hands, and a date window is positioned between 4 and 5 o'clock. The watch is protected by a dual-curved sapphire crystal with an inner anti-reflective coating. Powering the SLA079J1 is the Caliber 8L35 automatic movement, which offers manual winding, operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour, and has a power reserve of 50 hours with an accuracy rating of +15 to -10 seconds per day. This 26-jewel movement is engineered for precision and reliability.
Adhering to its professional Marinemaster heritage, the watch is equipped with a screw-down crown and a screw case back, providing a water resistance rating of 300 meters. The Prospex Marinemaster SLA079J1 is available now from Seiko boutiques and authorized retailers with a retail price of $2,900 USD. This release aims to appeal to a new generation of dive watch enthusiasts by blending Seiko's historical aquatic expertise with contemporary design and functionality.
