Seiko Launches Retro Motoring Speedtimer Watches

Seiko has expanded its Prospex motorsport-inspired collection with the introduction of two new Heritage Motoring Countdown Speedtimer models, the HBC003 in Powder Blue and the HBC004 in Petrol Blue. These timepieces are designed to evoke the spirit of retro motoring and draw direct inspiration from Seiko's pioneering 1969 Speedtimer, which was the world's first automatic chronograph to feature a vertical clutch and a column wheel mechanism. The new watches, however, adopt a modern time-and-date format while retaining a distinct 1970s automotive aesthetic.

The Powder Blue variant, designated HBC003, pays homage to Seiko's 1972 "Panda" chronograph. It features a flowing case design and a light blue dial protected by curved sapphire crystal. A countdown timer, enhanced with Lumibrite detailing for improved visibility, is incorporated to reinforce its functionality for motorsport enthusiasts. The Petrol Blue model, HBC004, channels the aesthetic of "young-timer" cars from the 1970s, a term often used for cars that are becoming classic. Its dial is presented in a deep petrol blue and is complemented by a sustainable leather strap, approved by the Leather Working Group (LWG), which is embossed with patterns reminiscent of vintage car interiors, thereby strengthening its connection to automotive heritage.

Both new Speedtimer watches are housed in compact and versatile 39.5mm stainless steel cases, with a thickness of 12mm. They are powered by Seiko's in-house 6R55 automatic movement. This calibre provides a substantial 72-hour power reserve, ensuring extended operation without frequent winding. A date window is discreetly positioned at the 4:30 mark on the dial. Furthermore, the timepieces are engineered for durability and functionality, boasting a robust 200-meter water resistance rating, making them suitable for a variety of environments and activities.
